How do I find the USB Vendor ID?

In NextWindow's utility program, USB Config, the Info tab displays the serial number, the model number, the USB ID numbers and the firmware version of the touch screen that is connected to the PC.

You can also view the USB ID numbers in Windows Device Manager as illustrated below.

Solutions to problems

Touch screen does not respond at all

When you connect power to the unit, and each time you touch the screen thereafter, the touch screen should beep. If not, check the following:

(Note: This does not apply to USB-powered models.)

The power supply unit is the one provided by NextWindow.
The power supply unit is plugged into the mains electricity supply.
The mains electricity supply is switched on at the wall.
The 12 VDC cable is connected to the touch screen.

USB not recognized” message appears on screen
Or, touch screen beeps but does not operate correctly

USB device not recognised

This may occur if you connect the USB cable before connecting the power. To fix the problem, disconnect the cables, and then re-connect in the following order:

(Note: This does not apply to USB-powered models.)

1. Connect the 12 VDC power cable.
2. Connect the USB cable.

The computer should then correctly detect the USB device (the touch screen).

Touch screen not working on waking up PC

This can occur due to the power management features of the PC.

To fix the problem in Microsoft Windows, proceed as follows:

1. In Control Panel, select System then go to the Hardware Tab and select Device Manager.
2. Expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers.
3. Double click on each USB Root Hub to display its properties.
4. For each hub, select the Power Management tab.
  USB device power management dialog
5. Make sure that "Allow the computer to turn off the device to save power" is deselected.
6. Click [OK] to save the setting.

Touch produces erratic responses on screen

This can occur if the touch screen has not been calibrated correctly. To fix the problem, re-calibrate. If you cannot calibrate the touch screen, contact NextWindow Technical Support.

Touch screen behaves erratically after calibration - light interference

This can be caused by interference from a nearby light source, such as a halogen light.

Background light interference can be filtered using USB Config as follows. Go to the Cameras tab. Select the frequency of the mains electricity in your country. For example, Europe is 50 Hz and North America is 60 Hz. This will synchronise the optical sensors with the lights and prevent interference.

Also, tilting or turning the screen away from the light source can reduce the effects of lights.

See also our Ambient Lighting page.

Configuring the touch screen

Portrait mode and landscape mode

NextWindow's touch screens can be installed in portrait or landscape orientation. The calibration procedure allows the touch screen to align itself correctly with the picture on the display screen. Note that, the display itself may need software to rotate the picture into portrait orientation.

Identifying the optical sensor locations

NextWindow's touch screens incorporate two optical sensors in two adjacent corners of the screen. For diagnostic purposes, it may be necessary to identify the sensors.  The sensors are always numbered '1' and then '2' in a clockwise direction along the side of the screen that contains them. For example, if the sensor side is the top of the screen, the top left is sensor 1 and the top right is sensor 2.

On some products, the section that supports the two sensors and the connections to the touch screen is known as the "camera bar."

You can rotate a NextWindow's touch screen to the required orientation, fix to the display screen, and then calibrate.

The optimum position of the camera bar for different models is as follows.

2100 Models

The 2100 touch frames normally have the camera bar at the top for both portrait and landscape applications.

2400 Series Models

The camera bar must be on the top for portrait mode.

The camera bar can be on the left or right for landscape mode. The normal convention is to have the camera bar on the left of the screen - then camera 1 is at the bottom left corner and camera 2 is at the top left corner.

Calibrating a NextWindow USB touch screen?

All of NextWindow's USB touch screens use the same simple four-point calibration procedure. For instructions, see Calibrating a NextWindow USB Touch Screen.

Where is the calibration key / button?

The default calibration key is the Scroll Lock key on a computer keyboard. The default way to start a calibration is to press the scroll-lock key 6 times. In addition, on some models, a hardware button is provided that can be used to start the calibration procedure with one press.

How do I turn the beeping sound off?

In USB Config, go to the General tab and set the buzzer time to zero.

How do I disable right mouse click?

For some applications, such as kiosks, it may be necessary to disable the right-click option so that users cannot access operating system functions.

To disable the right-click option, go to the Mouse tab in USB Config and set Right Click Delay to zero.

Operating system and application-specific information

How do I use the touch screen with Linux?

For instructions, see the NextWindow Touch Screen Working on Linux page.

Can I use the touch screen with an Apple computer?

Answer - Yes.

Plug in the USB cable and wait for the computer to recognise the USB device. Start the calibration procedure using the hardware button on the touch screen. If you want to change any of the default settings, you can run USB Config on a PC connected to the touch screen before connecting the Apple computer.

Working with Macromedia Flash buttons

A Macromedia Flash application button sometimes has two states when used with a normal mouse - a rollover state and a click. To make sure that a touch on the touch screen is always interpreted as a click and not a rollover, you can either remove the rollover state from your Flash application code, or set the drag threshold of the touch screen to as low as possible (but not 0%).

To set the drag threshold, go to the Mouse tab in USB Config and set the drag threshold to 0.5%.

Macromedia Flash applications can also exhibit slow response to mouse clicks. See the topic Application Software Missing Mouse Clicks for a remedy for this issue.

Application software missing mouse clicks

Certain third-party software applications cannot keep up with the normal rate of reported mouse clicks from NextWindow's products, which is 120 Hz. This can result in the application missing a touch action by the user.

This issue can be avoided by turning on the 50 Hz or 60 Hz sync setting available in USB Config. This will result in less than 50 or 60 messages being sent to the application per second.

Note: This phenomenon is caused by the programming of the application software. It may not be exhibited by other manufacturer's touchscreens, due to their slower touch response.

Custom calibration points and extended or stretched desktop

Certain applications, such as those using two display screens, need to specify the location of the calibration points. This can be achieved using the Custom Calibration Points dialog, which can be accessed from USB Config by pressing SHIFT CTRL C simultaneously.

(0, 0) is top left of the display, and (32767, 32767) is the bottom right corner.

Enter the coordinates of the required calibration points, click [Apply], then click [Save] to save the settings to the touch screen firmware.

The [Left Half of Screen] button automatically sets the calibration points to values within the left half of the screen.

To return to default calibration point values, go to the General tab of USB Config, and drag the calibration offset slider to zero and then back to 13%. Then click [Save] to save the settings to the touch screen controller board.

For information on touch-enabling a Windows stretched desktop, see Setting up Two Touch Screens for Stretched Desktop.

For information on touch-enabling a Windows extended desktop, see Setting up Two Touch Screens for Extended Desktop.

NextWindow multi-touch API

NextWindow's touch Application Program Interface (API) provides programmers with access to touch data generated by a NextWindow touch screen. It also provides derived touch information. The API is in the form of a DLL that provides useful functions for application developers.

For further information, see NextWindow Two-Touch API.

General information

What is the touch accuracy over the whole screen?

NextWindow specifies accuracy for the 2403 model as "+- 2mm (for 40" screen) over 90% of the screen." The following diagram illustrates where on screen this specification applies. (Diagram not to scale.)

How do I clean a NextWindow touch screen?

To clean the touch screen, use a lint-free, soft cloth dampened with standard, household glass cleaning solution as follows:

1. Spray a small amount of glass cleaner onto the cloth.
2. Wipe the glass of the touch screen to remove any dirt, dust, or finger marks.
3. Wipe the clear acrylic surfaces around the edges of the screen.
4. Remove any residual glass cleaner with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
WARNING
Do not spray the cleaner directly onto the touch screen as this could leave residue on the optical surfaces.
Do not use an abrasive cleaner or rough cloth as this could damage the optics.
